The Lucky Thirteen

NCAA Football PlayoffsThirteen people have been given the ultimate power over the college football post season. They are thirteen of the most prestigious and influential people in sports and in the nation today. They have been charged with the awesome responsibility of picking out the top four college football teams in America to participate in the very first College Football Playoffs.

The group of thirteen will also be under quite a bit more scrutiny that the US Congress, after all this is football we are talking about. And each of the thirteen members of the committee knows going in that there is no way that they will be able to please everyone with their final decision.

How could they? They only have four slots to fill and the strongest conferences in the country are represented by a group we call the Power Five. What about number five? One of the top conferences in the country will be left out of the playoffs and that fact does not sit well with critics of the new plan.

Of course everyone would like to see it work out. We would all love to see a really good college playoff set up that would give us the type of excitement as do the March Madness competitions in college basketball each spring. But will picking only four teams get that done?

Legendary Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne will be on the committee as will the former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Ms. Rice has certainly seen her share of stressful situations and Tom Osborne once had his mailbox blown up after a big rival game. So these are not simply a bunch of academics making up this committee.

This group of 13 will however be subject to second guesses from arm chair quarterbacks across the country. No matter which four teams they select, somebody is not going to like it. That goes with the territory. They all know that, but they are willing to give it a go anyway.

So, the 2014-2015 college football season is stacking up to be one of the most exciting and controversial in recent memory. Much attention will be given to the committee which will begin to issue their own standings alongside the AP and the Coach’s Polls beginning on Tuesday October the 28th and updated each following Tuesday throughout the season.

Of course, along with all the hype will come even greater competitive and financial pressures than ever before.  The four teams selected to the College Football Playoffs will each be bringing in around $6,000,000 to their respective universities, but, no pressure guys, have fun!
