Andy Murray (the world’s number one tennis player) will be among several top 10 players missing the Montreal Masters 1000, which takes place from August 7 to 13, due to a hip injury, organizers announced today.
The Scot, who won the last Rogers Cup held in Montreal in 2015 (during even years the tournament takes place in Toronto), has not played since injuring his hip in a loss to American Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
Serbian Novak Djokovic, former world number one and currently ranked fifth in the world, will also be absent as he will miss the rest of 2017 the season due to an elbow injury.
Swiss Stan Wawrinka (ranked number four in the world), also will be out as he also announced that he will miss the rest of the 2017 season with a knee injury.
Wawrinka, who lost in Wimbledon’s opening round against Russian Daniil Medvedev, announced that he would work arduously with his trainer to try to be fully recovered before the start of the U.S Open, which he won last year in a four set final against Djokovic 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 and 6-3.
Croatian Marin Cilic (ranked sixth in the world) will also sit out the Rogers cup as he recovers from an adductor injury.
Although these absences deprive the Rogers Cup of four players in the top 10, two young men on the rise, German Alexander Zverev (ranked eight in the world) and Austrian Dominic Thiem (ranked seventh in the world) have already confirmed they will attend the tournament.
More importantly, Spanish player Rafael Nadal (ranked number two) and Swiss Roger Federer (ranked number three), who are the favorites to compete for the top spot of the rankings the rest of the year; have also announced they will participate in the event.
