On 11/24/2012 Camacho lost his last bout on earth after suffering a fatal gunshot wound at a local bar in his home town of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Investigators say that the crime was drug related and found nine small bags of cocaine as well as another open bag of cocaine in the car. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle so it makes one wonder that there might be something more to the story like revenge?
Hector Camacho was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and at an early age his family moved to the United States and settled down in New York. He grew up on the rugged streets of Spanish Harlem and had many scrapes with the law. Camacho was a troubled youth and like most kids from that neck of the woods and his life changed once he took up boxing.
Hector “Macho” Camacho was one of the most flamboyant showmen that the professional boxing world has ever seen. Camacho’s hand and foot speed were a dangerous combination as he amassed a professional record of 79 wins, 6 losses and 3 draws! He won world titles in three different weight divisions, super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight in the 1980s.
In his career Camacho fought some of professional boxings biggest names such as: Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad, Vinny Pazienzia, and even fabulous Freddie Roach. His bouts with Pazienzia and Mancini, were some of the most memorable of that boxing era. His last professional fight was in 2010 but he actually was recently considering mounting a comeback at 50 years old!
As outstanding of a boxer as Hector “Macho” Camacho was one has to wonder without his troubled past bouts with drugs and alcohol how good could he have been if he stayed on the straight and narrow?
