The Complicated Case Of Matt Flynn

by admin on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013

Matt FlynnBackup quarterback Matt Flynn is back at work in Green Bay, Wisconsin filling in for the injured Aaron Rogers. It’s something that Flynn has done before and quite successfully. Two years ago, playing for the Packers against Detroit, Flynn put up a franchise record 480 yards passing and 6 touchdowns to beat the Lions in the final game of the 2011 season.  Flynn was standing in for the injured Aaron Rogers.

On the strength of that spectacular performance, Matt Flynn was recruited and signed by the Seattle Seahawks for a great three year deal valued at around $25 Million bucks. Then along came Russell Wilson.

Flynn then made a deal with the Oakland Raiders but they put their money on Terrelle Pryor and cut Matt from the team. He made a brief stop in Buffalo but that did not work out either.  Matt Flynn is a pretty good quarterback who seems to have ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He was originally drafted by the Packers in the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft after leading LSU to the NCAA Football National Championship in 2007.  Flynn served as a solid backup for Rogers from 2008-2011 when he was lured away by Seattle.

So now Matt is back with the Packers with whom he won a Super Bowl ring in 2010.  It was obvious from the moment he took the field that the other players on the team were happy to see a familiar face after experiencing some difficulties with second string quarterback Scott Tolzien.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy sent Flynn in for Tolzien when the Packers were trailing the Vikings 23-7 in the third quarter.  Matt led the comeback and tied the game with only moments to go at 23 all.  Unfortunately, after both teams scored field goals in the overtime period, neither team was able to post another score and the game ended and an unusual tie.

Flynn was the fourth quarterback to start for Green Bay in the month of November.  Unusual for a team that has only used three quarterbacks since 1992!

Packer’s fans will still be glad to see Aaron Rogers take the field again, no doubt.  After all, Rogers is their star player, their franchise quarterback, who is in his prime. He suffered a cracked collar bone but is already showing signs of coming back before the end of the season.

In the meantime, Packers fans and coaches and Aaron Rogers as well are happy to have Matt Flynn back in the fold at Lambeau Field.
