A Superb Nadal Breezes Past Haase To Reach Round Of 32 in Paris

by admin on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017

Rafa Nadal defeated Robin Haase in straight sets (6-1, 6-4 and 6-3) rafael-nadal-2017-atpon the Philippe Chatrier court in the second round of Roland Garros to advance to the round of 32 in an hour and 49 minutes.

Playing on his favorite court in Paris and cheered on by thousands of French fans Nadal taught Haase how to frustrate your opponent when you play on clay.

Rafa made Haase run a lot and the Dutch player ended the match, exhausted, frustrated and visibly upset. He simply had no answer for Nadal’s powerful right-handed strokes.

Quite a tennis exhibition from the Spaniard who did not take the foot of the gas until the end of the match, unlike he did in the previous round against Benoit Paire. This time Nadal was simply flawless.

In this match Nadal showed very quick feet, self-control and patience to pace himself and not reach the late sets fatigued. As a result, he was all over the court overwhelming Haase with his demolishing right hand point after point.

Nadal had 33 winning points and just 13 unforced errors and did not allow Haase to break his serve even once. With 74 wins in 76 matches in Roland Garros during his career and a mark of 19-1 this year on clay (the lone loss courtesy of Austrian Dominic Thiem in Rome), Nadal exudes confidence and looks well on his way to winning his tenth Roland Garros trophy.

Nadal again made it clear that to get him out of Roland Garros something more than desire and effort will be needed. Right now, in Paris, it looks like no other player can match his level. The only one who can stop him is himself and it will be up to his body and his focus how far he goes.

Next round Nadal will face 25-year-old Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, ranked 63rd in the ATP, who defeated Serbian Viktor Troicki 7-6, 7-6 and 7-6. Although these two players have never met before in their careers is unlikely that Basilashvili will have a chance if Nadal keeps playing at his current level.
