One In, One Out & One Standing Pat

Ed ReedIt had to happen. When Aaron Rodgers went down with a fractured collar bone against the Bears, Packers fans throughout the frozen northlands looked to each other and said, “Well, we will have to call back Matt Flynn now.” But it didn’t happen.

Green Bay started backup quarterback Seneca Wallace against the Philadelphia Eagles and readied Scott Tolzien off of the practice squad to back him up. But then Wallace goes down as well and Tolzien was pretty good but, not ready for the big time as yet.

The Packers lost both games without Rodgers. First to Chicago 27-20 and then to Philadelphia 27-13. So, finally, they made the call. It should have been an easy decision because Flynn had played as backup to Aaron Rodgers and he did quite well when he was there.

During his previous incarnation with the Packers, Matt Flynn earned himself a Super Bowl ring backing up Rodgers. Against the Lions he scored a franchise breaking 6 passing touchdowns and put up 480 yards on Detroit in Week 16 of 2011.

So well in fact that he got offers from other clubs for more money. Matt gave it a shot it didn’t work out so now he is back home in Green Bay. I hope he didn’t sell his snow boots!

In a move that surprised a lot of fans and writers alike, the Houston Texans have cut veteran Safety Ed Reed, formally with the Baltimore Ravens. Reed did not live up to expectations ranking 73rd out of 85 players at the safety position and the Texans are not doing so well this season either.

But don’t fret too much for Ed. Houston still has to pay him off to the tune of millions of bucks. Reed’s outspoken manner could also have had something to do with the Texans letting him go. When asked after Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals why Houston had lost again, Reed answered that the team was “outplayed and outcoached.”

Big Ben is pissed off. Somehow it was reported on the NFL Network that Ben Roethlisberger was talking to the Steelers about trading him off at the end of the season. Owing to how the season in Pittsburg has been going so far, this would have been understandable at least. Big Ben said it was ‘BS’.

Roethlisberger told reporters, “I’d retire before I’d accept a trade, I’ve talked to my wife about that. I don’t want to be anywhere else. This is where we want to be.”
